Biosafety

Introduction

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at WSU provides biosafety oversight for all plant related activities that include potentially biohazardous material in the lab, field and green house. This oversight is required by the NIH Guidelines and acts to ensure compliance with Federal, National, Regional, Local and WSU regulations and guidelines. OGRD Memo 13 states that the IBC Committee also provides oversight for deregulated transgenic items planted in WSU fields or planted by WSU employees at other sites. The primary aim of this oversight is to protect plant health, address concerns of genetic purity among local vegetation and crops and protect the public and environment from organisms and other biohazardous material that may pose a risk to plant health and or the environment. The committee's oversight acts to protect the researcher conducting the study, the environment, the public and the institution.
